Vuoden Huiput

Fabrik designed a visual identity for the 2023 Huiput of the Year competition that emphasizes diversity and inclusivity. A central element of the identity is a variety of hands that, when combined, form the competition’s iconic pyramid, symbolizing an inexhaustible source of creativity.

Starting Point

Vuoden Huiput is undeniably Finland’s most significant creative design competition. That’s why we at Fabrik were so thrilled when we were asked to design the visual identity for Vuoden Huiput in 2024. Few people receive such an honor during their careers.

Solution

From the very beginning, it was clear to us that our future identity must take a stand and make an impact so that we can promote positive change in the world. Diversity is the force that drives our world forward. Instead of isolating ourselves and shouting from our silos, we wanted to create an identity that brings different worlds together. An identity that manifests diversity as an inexhaustible source of creativity. We got the idea from a variety of hands that, when they come together, form the iconic pyramid of Vuoden Huippuja while also reflecting inclusivity and equality. The resulting identity is both recognizable and endlessly adaptable through dozens of different combinations.

“We immediately liked Fabrik’s idea of using diversity as the starting point for identity design. Bringing together different worlds was an insightful way to approach the topic with a fresh perspective, through a new visual language. “

“Corporate social responsibility is the foundation of Fabrik’s operations, which is another reason why it was a natural partner for Grafia. “

Katri Soramäki, Executive Director, Grafia

Results

The visual identity for Vuoden Huiput, which champions diversity, has already garnered praise. Our collaboration with Grafia on this project continues, and during the first few months of 2024, the visual identity will be rolled out across dozens of different formats, including pre-event marketing, the yearbook, the awards gala, and exhibitions.

Terra Firma
Rainwater Collective

Fabrik revamped Terra Firma Rainwater Collective’s brand story and visual identity, highlighting the organization’s innovative solution for managing urban flooding. The new communications emphasize the importance of the water cycle and encourage donors to help drive positive change.

Starting Point

Terra Firma Rainwater Collective addresses challenges in urbanizing cities where heavy rains in monsoon climates cause severe flooding. Terra Firma is a nonprofit American organization.

The challenge has been to clearly communicate Terra Firma’s work and its impact, as the effects are far-reaching and the solution has numerous positive ripple effects.

What makes Terra Firma unique is its ingenious invention: a mounting hook that allows gutters to be installed directly onto a corrugated metal roof. Previously, communication had focused on presenting this technically ingenious solution in an engineering-oriented manner. Now, the goal was to reach a broader audience. The goal was to tell the story in an inspiring and professional way to potential donors—family-owned companies, foundations, and individual donors—so that they would feel they were part of the solution to the problem.

Solutions

For Terra Firma, water is both a problem and a solution. The communication campaign centered on the root cause of the problem: the disruption of the water cycle. In the target countries, the natural water cycle is disrupted when large areas of water-absorbing soil are covered by buildings. Terra Firma has a solution that enables a new kind of water cycle—one that supports the conditions necessary for life—in an increasingly urbanized environment.

In our solution, Terra Firma’s visual identity and presentation materials were revamped to better support the organization’s operations and expertise. The refined visual identity, presentation materials, and animated video tell the story concisely.

The story revolves around impact. The materials not only describe the problem and the solution, but also the far-reaching chain of positive impacts; understanding this gives new meaning to supporting Terra Firma’s work and inspires donors to want to be part of the solution.

The story was also incorporated into Terra Firma’s brand identity

The company’s long name was arranged across three lines in the logo, so that each word describing the company’s work is meaningfully highlighted. The logo was accompanied by a symbol that is both strikingly symbolic and concrete. The frame surrounding the water droplet represents a water tank into which water collects from the roof. The upper part of the symbol is a wavy line that represents both the water’s surface and the profile of a metal roof. At the heart of it all is water, circulating in a new cycle that benefits people, homes, and the urban environment.

The visual storytelling needs were addressed by combining striking, authentic photographs with a simple, more technical illustration style. The real locations and the presence of people in the photographs add warmth and impact. The chosen informative illustration style brings clarity to the presentation of technical solutions and their ripple effects.

We can’t control the rain, but we can channel it to benefit people and the place they call home.

“Since we weren’t familiar with the world of marketing, we didn’t know what to expect, but we were very excited to learn and watch the process unfold into a logo, a video, and clear, concise language. We really appreciated Fabrik’s responsiveness, attention to detail, and collaborative approach. Thank you! “

VR Group
Central Station
Eliel 150

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Eliel Saarinen’s birth, Fabrik organized a unique event for VR Group at Helsinki Central Station. For the first time in the station’s history, the bells in the clock tower rang out to a composition created specifically for this occasion by composer Tuomas Skopa. The event drew a crowd of over a thousand people and received widespread national media coverage, reinforcing the station’s significance as a Finnish landmark.

Starting Point

Sunday, August 20, 2023, marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of architect Eliel Saarinen, who designed the Central Railway Station. We wanted to honor this special occasion in a unique way together with the city’s residents.
But how?

Solution

The Central Railway Station is a landmark familiar to all Finns, and its tower houses Finland’s most-watched clocks. Throughout its entire existence, however, the clock tower has been missing one feature: its bells have never rung. Now, if ever, it was high time to celebrate Saarinen’s birthday by giving the clocks a voice.

The task of creating the soundscape for the Central Railway Station was entrusted to Tuomas Skopa of Artlab Studio, who has been hailed as a melodic genius. As a source of inspiration, he was given the same works by Sibelius and Merikanto that, according to accounts, Saarinen listened to while designing the station.

The sound of the bells was broadcast live by MTV Uutiset, Yle, IS, IL, and HS, among others

“This unforgettable event exceeded all our expectations. By doing something thrilling, we managed to create both a historic phenomenon worthy of the station and massive national visibility. Both of these are things that money can’t buy. “

Jani Jääskeläinen, VR Group

Results

The straightforward design and production attracted an audience of millions. The chimes of the main train station’s clocks were featured in national news broadcasts and countless articles—not to mention social media posts and people’s coffee-table conversations. These are signs that tell us we’ve succeeded in our goal of making the news by doing something extraordinary.

The event was covered a week in advance by, among others, Iltalehti, Iltasanomat, Helsingin Sanomat, YLE, and MTV. At the moment of truth, the event was followed not only by a crowd of a thousand people but also by numerous cameras: the ringing of the bells was broadcast live by MTV Uutiset, Yle, IS, IL, and HS, among others. In interviews, the celebratory moment was framed as part of the Central Railway Station’s long-term strategy, and information was shared about the future development of this architectural gem that beats at the heart of the city.

Kekäle
Pitämisen puolesta

Starting point

Kekäle is a Finnish clothing store of 200 employees, with over 2 million customer encounters a year in 13 stores and a webstore.

The main idea of Kekäle’s operations has for years been “Pidä enemmän” (like more and wear more) – yourself and your clothes. The goal is for customers to only buy their favourite clothes to minimize the need of buying.

In 2022, Kekäle started a determined sustainability work. Fabrik’s strategic partner Rainbow Collection was selected as Kekäle’s consult and adviser. When Kekäle’s first sustainability strategy was finished for years 2023-2025 and they made the decision to apply for international B Corp certification, it was time to start the sustainability journey from the view of communicating, reporting and commiting.

Solutions

Concept of sustainability communication. As the work launched, we defined a new level on communications, as the earlier visual policies and messages were designed to serve a different purpose. Together we figured, with which kind of tone and catalogue could Kekäle promote its sustainability work inspiringly, transparently and credibly in their sustainability report, stores and other channels.

The concept “Pitämisen puolesta” (in favour of keeping/liking) continues the “Osta vähemmän, pidä enemmän” (Buy less, wear and like more) thought especially from the view of boosting a customer’s self-esteem: for Kekäle, clothes are not only temporary fashion vanity, but an essential part of how great it feels to be yourself.

Sustainability report. The report was based on a freshly done sustainability strategy. It was to be built by the standards but with inspiration, courage and a big heart. A strategy was made concrete by doing interviews and the new concept was used to bring clarity among with infographics and photographs.  Get to know more >

“IF OUR FIELD WANTS TO BE SUSTAINABLE, WE HAVE TO SELL LESS CLOTHES. IT IS TIME FOR CONSUMPTION TO CHANGE – OUR BUSINESS IS READY FOR THIS. “

Culture Handbook. Staff and their well-being was highlighted in Kekäle’s materiality assessment. Kekäle is a family business and the staff is the heart of their success: “We want our staff to grow, glow and experience their job as a meaningful thing to do.”

Using the new concept, a new Culture Handbook was built from the view of leading a business culture and developing employer image. Staff experience surveys, theming and folding were done. The Culture Handbook will be in a constant development from now on.

B Corp certification. Whilst making the sustainability strategy Kekäle decided to apply for the international B Corporation certificate. It is a respected and a hard work demanding recognition, which requires a holistic sustainability of the operations and a verifiable positive impact. The certificate is due to be received by the end of 2023 which allows Kekäle to make its sustainability transparent and receive internationally credible standards for its operations. We helped with the certificate questions, designing, collecting documents and clarifying the meaning of the application.

“In the report publishing a year from now we are able to tell a lot more about our work. With our work, we hope to encourage other businesses to seize the sustainability theme.

Results

Through their actions Kekäle has taken brave steps towards a more sustainable business, in which Kekäle’s role changes from an individual seller to an accountable clothing companion and a trendsetter. At the same time, Kekäle’s brand has started to grow towards a direction which consumers and stakeholders expect from the achievers of the future.

Abloy
: A Sustainable Future, Built on Trust

We developed a corporate responsibility concept for Abloy that highlights the company’s long-term efforts in the areas of social and environmental responsibility. The new communication strategy and visual identity emphasize Abloy’s commitment to sustainable development and reinforce its position as a pioneer in the security industry.

Starting Point

It’s no exaggeration to say that the ABLOY brand is part of Finnish identity. Just about everyone from Hanko to Nuorgam has an ABLOY key in their pocket in one form or another. This has been the case for several generations now. Schoolchildren in the 1980s and 1990s, wearing the traditional ABLOY Classic on a lanyard, even coined a new word in the Finnish language: “key kids.” ABLOY’s established position has been further strengthened by its ability to innovate and remain at the forefront as a developer of digital solutions that enhance ease of use and manageability. It is therefore only natural that ABLOY consistently ranks among Finland’s most respected brands year after year—specifically, in second place in 2022.

Known as a leader in safety and locking systems, the company has also been a pioneer in many ways in the areas of social and environmental responsibility. For decades, the company has carried out successful work to promote workplace safety and employee well-being, as evidenced, for example, Abloy’s Ikämestari program, which focuses on work-life balance and job satisfaction and has been cited as a model example on many occasions. A major development project to obtain ISO 14001 environmental certification was launched at the company a quarter of a century ago, in 1997. The Joensuu plant has been landfill-free since 2017, the district heating it uses is carbon-neutral, and 100% of its electricity has come from renewable energy sources since 2013. As part of the ASSA ABLOY Group, the company has also systematically worked to make its supply chain management and reporting more sustainable.

However, the commendable work done by many different parties came as a surprise. Abloy’s sustainability efforts needed a core concept that would clarify the big picture and tie everything together, as well as a strong connection to the ABLOY brand. In other words, a clear narrative explaining what sustainability means to Abloy, its customers, and its stakeholders, and messages—presented in an easy-to-understand format—about the brand-new carbon roadmap and carbon footprint calculations.

Solution

The impact of Abloy’s operations and the company’s commitment to sustainability were brought into the spotlight they deserved. Rather than relying solely on the Group’s sustainability report, the goal was to speak proudly in Abloy’s own voice—and with a recognizable visual identity—about the company’s goals, strategies, and day-to-day decisions. However, sustainability is not treated as a separate communication theme; rather—just as in our operations—the perspective of sustainable development is closely integrated into all the topics we address.

The first elements to see the light of day were the websites that bring together essential information, the visual elements for online events, and supporting communication materials. Step by step, the theme is becoming more deeply integrated into the ABLOY brand and is naturally becoming an integral part of all internal and external communications.

Results

There was a clear need within the organization for a concise vision and visualized messages regarding Abloy’s approach to corporate responsibility — the initiative was received with enthusiasm both in Finland and around the world, and Abloy employees actively participated in raising awareness of the topic, for example, on social media channels. In addition, Abloy’s marketing team has received additional requests for a wide variety of materials in a continuous stream since its release.

Main Train Station: The Heart of Helsinki

Fabrik revamped the brand identity and communications for Helsinki Central Station, highlighting its status as an icon and a cultural heritage site. The development program included a sustainability strategy, the creation of a website and social media channels, and extensive collaboration with stakeholders. As a result, the station’s image has improved, the website serves over 50,000 visitors annually, and its social media channels reach tens of thousands of people each month.

Starting Point

The Central Railway Station is not only an iconic landmark that can be considered a national treasure—and an architectural gem that has repeatedly been ranked among the world’s most beautiful train stations—but also by far the busiest building and commercial hub in our country. Every Finn is familiar with Helsinki Central Station and the stone statues guarding its main entrances.

When Fabrik first launched, however, the well-known and emotionally resonant brand lacked a clear direction and a comprehensive plan to promote sustainability. It had maintained its position through conscientious care and by keeping up with the times, but it was brimming with potential for more—from the perspective of tourists, city residents, owners, and Helsinki’s urban culture as a whole.

In today’s online world, where the customer experience is vital, the Central Railway Station was practically entirely reliant on visitors’ stories and mentions on travel websites or in articles. It had no online presence and no active social media channels.

The brand film we produced for the Main Railway Station and its partners highlights Steiss’s iconic position at the heart of our nation

Solution

To ensure that the Central Railway Station enters its second century in top condition, VR Group’s real estate unit launched a station development program. However, plans, strategies, programs, or visions do not translate into decisions, changes, achievements, and impacts until people are inspired to get involved.

Given the cultural and historical significance of the Central Railway Station, we have involved a wide range of stakeholders in the project from the very beginning, including the National Board of Antiquities, the City of Helsinki, the architectural community, and, of course, the Central Railway Station’s customers. Extensive stakeholder surveys were conducted to serve as the foundation for the sustainability program, and a materiality analysis was formulated based on their results. In addition to zero-emission mobility, the program itself focuses on minimizing the station’s own environmental and climate impact, creating a safe and inclusive space for everyone, increasing transparency, and promoting awareness of the building’s unique cultural and historical significance. Various channels have been used for communication and dialogue, depending on the situation and need, ranging from PowerPoint presentations to events and social media channels.

Online, efforts to establish the Main Train Station’s online presence have been carried out in a controlled, step -by-step manner . In addition to launching its own service website and establishing a social media presence, the iconic site has also focused on ensuring the accuracy of information on service websites used by travelers.

The visual identity we designed for the Central Railway Station is reflected in all marketing and communications

Results

According to the latest visitor survey conducted at the Central Station , its image has clearly improved in the desired direction. The station is most highly regarded for its architectural merit and its evolving selection of restaurants.

The website päärautatieasema.fi, which has also won an award at the Finnish Web Awards, has grown in just two years to the point where it now serves more than 50,000 visitors annually.

On Instagram and Facebook, the Central Railway Station’s social media content reaches tens of thousands of people every month. In the couple of years since they were launched, the Central Railway Station’s social media accounts have already built up a highly engaged following of thousands of people.
